On the afternoon of April 9, 2024, President Xi Jinping held talks with President of the Federated States of Micronesia Wesley Simina, who is on a state visit to China, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Xi Jinping pointed out that this year marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Micronesia. The two countries have always treated each other as equals and with mutual respect, and their friendly cooperation and mutual benefit have improved the well-being of the two peoples. China supports Micronesia in safeguarding national sovereignty and independence, taking a development path suited to its national conditions, revitalizing its economy, and improving people's livelihood. China is ready to work with Micronesia to take the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries as a new starting point, maintain exchanges and dialogue at all levels, strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields, and take China-Micronesia relations to a new level. The two sides should stick to the political positioning of bilateral relations as comprehensive strategic partners, adhere to the keynote of win-win cooperation and common development, accelerate Belt and Road cooperation, enhance cooperation on infrastructure projects, and strengthen cultural, health, education, and subnational exchanges as well as people-to-people exchanges in other fields. He welcomed more young people from Micronesia to study in China. He also noted that projects initiated by some regions of China such as "delivering medical aid to islands" and "taking drama performance overseas" are well received by the people of Micronesia, and the two sides can carry out more similar projects. China is ready to provide climate change assistance and capacity-building training to Micronesia within the framework of South-South cooperation. China will also strengthen coordination and cooperation with Micronesia within multilateral frameworks such as the United Nations and the Pacific Islands Forum to jointly practice multilateralism and uphold fairness and justice.

Xi Jinping pointed out that China and Pacific island countries have a time-honored history of exchanges, profound friendship and common development needs. China's relationship with island countries is based on mutual assistance within the framework of South-South cooperation, and it is neither targeted at any third party nor should it be interfered with by any third party. China maintains that any country seeking to develop relations with Pacific island countries should honor their independent choices, put development first, and adhere to openness and inclusiveness. Island countries have the right to choose a development path suited to their national conditions and carry out friendly cooperation with all development partners. China is ready to continue to provide support for the development of island countries to the best of its ability and carry out trilateral or multilateral cooperation.

Wesley Simina said that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Federated States of Micronesia and China, the two countries have always adhered to the basic principles of mutual respect, equality and non-interference in each other's internal affairs, and bilateral relations have made great progress. The FSM firmly abides by the one-China principle, believes that there is but one China in the world, the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, and supports China's position on issues concerning its core interests such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Xizang. The Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative and the Global Civilization Initiative, proposed by President Xi Jinping, are of great significance to helping developing countries achieve common development and promoting world peace, stability and prosperity. Wesley Simina thanked China for its valuable assistance to Micronesia and other Pacific island countries for their economic and social development over the years, and expressed his readiness to deepen cooperation with China in agriculture, fishery, economy and trade, investment, tourism and digital economy within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative and work jointly to address climate change. China's cooperation with the Pacific island countries is conducive to regional peace and development, and Micronesia will continue to promote such cooperation.

After the talks, the two heads of state witnessed the signing of a number of bilateral cooperation documents on the Belt and Road Initiative, green development, agriculture, health care, infrastructure, and development cooperation, among other fields.

The two sides will issue a Joint Statement between the People's Republic of China and the Federated States of Micronesia.

Prior to the talks, Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan held a welcoming ceremony for Wesley Simina and his wife Ancelly Simina at the square outside the East Gate of the Great Hall of the People.

Upon Wesley Simina's arrival, the guard of  honor lined up in salutation. As the two heads of state stepped onto the stand, the military band played the national anthems of China and Micronesia, and a 21-gun salute was fired at Tian'anmen Square. Accompanied by Xi Jinping, Wesley Simina reviewed the guard of honor of the People's Liberation Army and watched the march-past.

Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan held a welcoming banquet for Wesley Simina and his wife at the Golden Hall of the Great Hall of the People in the evening.

Wang Yi was present at the above events.
