Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Jiang Yu's Remarks on the Assault at Chinese Deputy Consul General in Houston

Q: It is learnt that Chinese Deputy Consul General in Houston and his family were harassed and assaulted by US police while driving back to the Consulate General. How do you comment?

A: This issue is being dealt with. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, its Embassy in the US and Consulate General in Houston have made solemn representations to the US side. We take note that the spokesperson of the US Department of State said that it will be taken seriously, the investigation is under way and it is essential to protect the safety of all foreign diplomatic and consular staff in the US. China urges the US to observe the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations and the China-U.S. consular treaty, find out the truth as soon as possible, hold the responsible to account and ensure that China’s diplomatic and consular staff and their premises are free from any intrusion. We resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of China's diplomatic and consular staff.
