Textile trade integration benefits to all countries: FM(21/10/04)

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue Thursday called on all countries to make contribution to the integration of textile trade rather than set new obstacles.

The integration of textile trade is a major achievement of the Uruguay Round of trade talks among World Trade Organization members and other countries, and is in the interest of all countries, she said at a regular press conference.

It is reported that the European Commission will eliminate quota restrictions on imported textile and clothing products from China next year, but it will raise the tariff rate from the current 9 percent to 12 percent on Chinese textile and clothing products.

According to the Agreement of Textiles and Clothing signed in 1994 during the Uruguay Round, WTO members will replace quotas on textile and clothing trade with tariffs starting Jan. 1, 2005.
