Phone users lead world by a nearly 20 percent share (11/12/03)

    China's mobile and fixed phone subscribers account for nearly one fifth of the world's total, or about 500 millions, according to the International Telecommunications Union.

    The union noted that China's share in phone users rose from 9.6 percent in 1998 to 19 percent in 2002.

    Xi Guohua, vice minister of information industry, said China's information industry has developed into a pillar industry in Chinese economy at the 2003 China International Telecommunications Equipment and Technology Exhibition that opened in Beijing on Nov.12.

    By the end of the first three quarters this year China has more than 500 million phone users, ranking first in the world with mobile and fixed phone users going halves. According to statistics,every 100 Chinese have 20.3 fixed phones and 19.5 mobile phones.

    China's Internet users have reached 68 million, ranking second in the world, said the vice minister.
