1st national economic census to be launched(11/20/03)

China is to launch the first national economic census in 2004, and starts to conduct the censusevery five years from 2008, said Li Deshui, director of China's National Statistics Bureau(NSB) here at a press conference on Nov.20.

The census is designed to acquire an economic panorama of China's second and third industries and to complete the database which covers all economic sectors, said Li.

It is so arranged in a five year period that the census resultswill serve the country's five-year-plan program for economic and social development.

China did not have a fixed schedule for national censuses untilthe current cyclical census system was set up in 1994.
