Chinese FM: Dialogue best way to solve int'l disputes (07/23/09)

PHUKET, Thailand, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The peaceful settlement of international disputes through dialogue and consultation is the best way and the best option, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said here Thursday.

"No matter what setbacks there may be, countries should stay committed to working through effective dialogue platforms and channels to enhance understanding, bridge differences and dissolve conflicts," said Yang at the 16th ASEAN Regional Forum.

"Force will not make peace. Nor will the mere use of sanctions solve the problem," he said.

The Chinese foreign minister also underlined the importance of unity and coordination.

Only through multilateral cooperation at the international and regional levels can problems be tackled effectively, he added.

"The (Korea Peninsula) nuclear issue should be solved by peaceful means through diplomatic negotiation," Yang said at a press briefing Thursday, adding that the six-party talks are the effective platform to properly solve the nuclear issue.
