Ambassador Cui Tiankai Lodged Solemn Representations Over Obama-Dalai Lama Meeting to the US Government
2014/02/22

On February 21, 2014, Chinese Ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai lodged solemn representations over President Obama's meeting with Dalai Lama to the US government in Washing DC.

Ambassador Cui Tiankai said that Tibet is an inseparable part of the sacred territory of China and Tibet-related issues are purely China's internal affairs, in which the US has no right to interfere. The US side maintains that it recognizes Tibet as a part of China and it does not support "Tibet independence" on the one hand, but arranges a meeting between its President and the Dalai Lama, the head of the separatist clique for Tibet independence on the other. This move constitutes a gross interference in the internal affairs of China, runs counter to the US's commitment of not supporting "Tibet independence", gravely violates the fundamental norms governing international relations and severely impairs China-US relations. China expresses strong indignation and firm opposition against it.

Ambassador Cui Tiankai stressed that respecting each other's core interests and major concerns is key to the healthy and stable development of China-US relations. We strongly urge the US side to take China's position seriously, immediately take effective measures to eliminate the malign impact of the meeting, stick to its commitment that Tibet is a part of China and that it opposes "Tibet independence", respect China's core interests, stop using Tibet-related issues to interfere in China's internal affairs, and stop conniving in or supporting the anti-China separatist activities of the Dalai clique.

Ambassador Cui Tiankai also told the Washington DC-based Chinese media that the US side knows very well what kind of person Dalai is. The US's claim that Dalai is a religious figure and the meeting with him is out of human rights and cultural concerns is nothing but deceiving oneself and others, which only serves to expose the truth more explicitly. Any attempt to play the Dalai "card" and use Tibet-related issues to disturb and undermine stability and development of Tibet of China is doomed to failure. The will of the Chinese government and people to safeguard the sovereignty and unity of the country is unshakable and the historical trend towards the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation is unstoppable. Going against the trend of the times, the US side is making trouble for itself and will eventually hurt its own interests. "It takes the one who created the problem to fix it." The US side must immediately take effective measures to correct its mistakes and win back the trust of the Chinese government and people.
