Minister&DCM Wu Xi's Remarks at the Special Screenplay of "Survival in Shanghai"
2015/11/18

Minister Ilan Sztulman,

Mr. Jeffery Stone,

Ladies and gentlemen,

Dear friends,

Warm welcome to you all, thank you for joining us tonight, for this compelling and thought-provoking documentary.

The documentary brought us back to the darkest page of human history. At the same time, it highlighted the warmest bonds we shared as human beings in time of extreme difficulties. It celebrates the victory of humanity, commemorates friendship and love, and soberly reminds us of the lessons of history. Once again, our special thanks and appreciation go to the director of the documentary, Ms. Yan Xiaoying, and the talented team of the Shanghai Media Group.

I also would like to thank our "neighbor",the Israeli Embassy to the United States. Your support for this event is greatly appreciated. American Jewish Committee worked diligently as our co-organizer. Mr. Stone, Mr. Nissim, thank you very much for your excellent job.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Today, we are very honored to have Betty, one of the survivors, with us. Looking back in history, Shanghai was not a good destination for Jewish refugees, since China was under brutal invasion of Japanese militarism, Shanghai was a war-torn city itself at that time. Despite all this, China opened her arms, gave the Jewish refugees with a small haven in that fierce storm, gave them hope at the crossroad of life and death. This chapter of history once again showcased the longstanding friendship between the Chinese people and the Jewish people. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

This year marks the 70th Anniversary of the victory of World Anti-Fascist War and the Chinese people's war of resistance against Japanese Aggression. With huge national sacrifice, the Chinese people fought tenaciously for 14 years until the great victory. We will never forget those people who gave their support and assistance to us against aggression. It's our strong belief that, as long as all peace-loving countries and people stand firmly together, support and help each other, work hand in hand, fight shoulder to shoulder, the peace and justice will prevail.

History is a mirror to the future. Today's world has undergone significant changes. Peace and development have become the prevailing trend. However, the world is far from tranquil, and is confronted with a series of grave challenges. We strongly condemn the terrorist attacks last week in Paris, and extend deepest condolences to the victims and sincere sympathy to the bereaved families and the injured. Terrorism is the common enemy of the international community. Our hearts are with the French people, and we firmly support France and other international partners in combating terrorism.

It needs solidarity and strength of the international community to address such issues as terrorism, non-proliferation, epidemic diseases, poverty and climate change.

Deep in the Chinese philosophy, helping others is helping oneself, one person's gain should not be another person's loss. It is particularly true in this increasingly interdependent world. Based on such cognition, China is strongly committed to promoting a new model of international relations with win-win cooperation at the core and forge a human community of shared destiny.

In the 21st century, we should not let differences divide us, should not let bias and distrust distance us, should not let the zero-sum mindset prevent us from working together. We should work together to prevent tragic history from repeating itself, and join hands to build for a better future for ourselves and the generations to come.

Thank you.
