Minister Wu Xi Attended the Opening Ceremony of China-US Joint
Training Program for Afghan Diplomats

The opening ceremony of the US session of the 5th round of China-US joint training program for Afghan diplomats was held at the US State Department on August 24, 2016. On behalf of Ambassador Cui Tiankai, Minister Wu Xi attended the ceremony and made remarks. US Under Secretary for political Affairs of the State Department Tom Shannon, Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Affairs of the State Department Jonathan Carpenter, Political Counselor of the Embassy of Afghanistan in the United States Ramin Manawi and the Afghan diplomats under training were present.

 

Minister Wu conveyed Ambassador Cui's congratulations on the opening of the training program and read the message from Wang Yi, Minster of Foreign Affairs of China. Wang Yi said, this year, President Ghani met President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Tashkent summit and Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah paid a successful visit to China. Such close high-level exchanges between the two countries have injected new impetus into the China-Afghanistan Strategic Partnership of Cooperation. China will continue to support the peaceful reconciliation process of Afghanistan and play a constructive role in helping Afghanistan to achieve unity, stability and prosperity at an early time. China-US joint training program for Afghan diplomats has become a good example of China-US cooperation in a third country and helps to bring consistent attention from the international community to the issue of Afghanistan. The Chinese side welcomes Afghan diplomats to join the program in China.

 

Minster Wu said the close China-US cooperation in Afghanistan showcased the width, depth and strength of this critically important bilateral relationship and demonstrated how much both sides can do together to promote peace, stability and prosperity across the world. Such spirit and model of cooperation is playing role in a broader range of issues and in different regions. Wu welcomed Afghan diplomats to continue the program in China and wished them a rewarding and memorable trip to China.

 

Under Secretary Shannon spoke highly of US-China cooperation on the Afghanistan issue and said the two countries have successfully organized joint training program for Afghan diplomats for several consecutive years. The US and China, along with the international community, are committed to assisting and supporting Afghanistan for achieving peace, stability and prosperity. Counselor Manawi thanked China and the US for their support and said both countries are important friends of Afghanistan and are providing important political, economic and security help to Afghanistan. The cooperation among China, the US and Afghanistan plays a significant role in promoting peace and stability in the region.
