2015/11/20

On November 17th 2015, the Chinese embassy hosted a special screening of the documentary "Survival in Shanghai". Minister Wu Xi delivered remarks on the occasion. Minister of the Israeli embassy Ilan Sztulman, Chairman of Asian Pacific Institute of American Jewish Committee Mr. Jeffrey Stone and over 300 other guests from US government, Congress, think tanks, media, academia and Jewish community attended the event.

In her remarks, Minister Wu Xi said that at the height of the Japanese military agression against China during 1930s to 1940s, the Chinese people opened their arms, selflessly took in more than 20,000 Jewish refugees and offered them a small safe haven at a time of life and death. This part of history is an epitome of the longstanding friendship between the Chinese and Jewish people. This year marks the 70th Anniversary of the victory of the world anti-fascist war and the Chinese people's war of resistance against Japanese aggression. The Chinese people will never forget those who gave their valuable support and assistance during the war. History shows that when humanity faces major challenges, as long as all peace-loving countries and peoples stand together, work hand in hand and fight shoulder to shoulder, peace and justice will prevail.

Minister Wu pointed out that history is a mirror to the future. The world today is undergoing profound changes. Peace and development have become the prevailing trend of our time. However, the world is far from tranquil, and is confronted with a series of grave challenges. China is firmly committed to building a new model of international relations with win-win cooperation at the core and a human community of shared destiny. China will work with the international community to prevent historical trageties from happening again and buid a better future for generations to come.

In their remarks, Minister Ilan Sztulman and Mr. Jeffrey Stone expressed sincere gratitute to the selfless help by the Chinese people to the Jewish people during WWII. They are heartened to see that the friendship between Jewish and Chinese people has withstood the test of time. They hope that the international community will work together for the peace, stability and prosperity of the world.
