Minister Xu Xueyuan Attends Opening Ceremony of
Maryland-Anhui Promotion Week

Maryland-Anhui Promotion Week, co-hosted by People's Government of Anhui Province and State Government of Maryland, opened in Rockville, Maryland, on May 29. Chinese Ambassador Cui Tiankai and Governor of Maryland Larry Hogan sent congratulatory letter and proclamation to the opening respectively. Vice Governor Zhou Xi'an of Anhui Province, Minister Xu Xueyuan of the Chinese Embassy, Maryland Lieutenant Governor Boyd Rutherford, State Secretary John Wobensmith attended the opening ceremony and addressed the audience.

Ambassador Cui said in his congratulatory letter, the China-U.S. relationship is one of the most important bilateral relations in the world. A sound and stable bilateral relationship not only serves the fundamental interests of our two countries and peoples, but also meets the common expectations of the international community. Sub-national cooperation is of great significance to the overall bilateral relations. He highly appreciates Anhui and Maryland's important role in deepening friendship and cooperation between our two peoples, and hopes Maryland-Anhui Promotion Week can inject new impetus to the development of relationship between Anhui and Maryland.

In her remarks, Minister Xu Xueyuan introduced China's domestic and foreign policies. Minister Xu stressed, this year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening up. Reform and opening-up has been the key to China's achievement in the past four decades. Not long ago, President Xi Jinping put forward a series of measures for the next stage of China's reform and opening-up. China will host the first international import expo, China International Import Expo, this November in Shanghai. China is committed to furthering the reform and opening-up policy. This will provide more opportunities for the U.S., including the State of Maryland. President Xi Jinping pointed out, the growth of China-U.S. relations has been achieved with support of local governments and their people. Going forward, it will continue to draw strength from and deliver benefits to them. The long-lasting sister province/state relationship between Anhui and Maryland has laid solid foundation for exchanges and cooperation. Under the new situation, we believe Anhui and Maryland can seize opportunities for development and win-win cooperation, contribute to the overall bilateral relations, and bring tangible benefits to our two peoples.

Anhui and Maryland established sister province/state relationship in 1980. Maryland-Anhui Promotion Week was held from May 29 to 31, in Maryland. The promotion included business discussions and cultural exchanges covering the fields of trade, agriculture, biopharmaceuticals, education, tourism, etc. Maryland-Anhui Promotion Week aimed at further deepening the sister province/state relationship between Anhui and Maryland, promoting substantial cooperation in a wide range of areas and people to people exchanges. Vice Governor Zhou Xi'an of Anhui Province led a large delegation to visit Maryland and host Maryland-Anhui Promotion Week.
