Remarks by Minister Xu Xueyuan at the 2021 Asian American New Year Gala

January 2, 2021

I have mixed feelings attending today's 2021 Asian American New Year Gala. I would like to congratulate the Chinese Alumni Association of Greater Washington (CAAGW) on coordinating the organization of this event once again, and I commend other Asian groups on your full participation.

The year 2020 has been an extraordinary year in human history. The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the world and China-US relations. It has also changed the lives of Asian Americans, including overseas Chinese, in the United States.

Facing this severe pandemic, the Chinese people have united as one and made concerted efforts in their fight. Thanks to these efforts, China has secured great achievements in bringing the pandemic under control and registering good economic growth amid an economic downturn. And we will embark on a new journey of building a socialist modernized country in an all-round way in the New Year.

Facing the dark clouds overshadowing China-US relations, the two peoples have put hearts together to overcome difficulties and preserve the spark of people-to-people exchanges. I believe they will continue to make unremitting efforts to reopen dialogue, restart cooperation, and rebuild mutual trust between the two countries in the New Year.

The development of nature follows its own rule, and the right way shall always prevail. Today's gala will surely show the world that the power of culture can rise above the raging virus, bring the two sides of the Pacific closer together, melt the racial differences, and encourage us to join hands to pursue peace and prosperity for all countries in the world, better lives for the people and friendship between peoples of different countries.

I wish the gala a complete success! Hope we will all have a promising and prosperous 2021!
