DCM & Minister Deng Hongbo Speaks at the University of Central Florida


Mr. Deng Hongbo, Minister and Deputy Chief of Mission of the Chinese Embassy in the United States, was invited to Orlando, Florida to attend the Symposium on China-US relations hosted by the Lou Frey Institute of Politics and Government at the University of Central Florida (UCF) and delivered the keynote speech. More than 800 people attended the event, including former US Congressman Lou Frey, representatives of the political, business and academic communities of Orlando and the faculty and students of UCF.

In his speech, Minister Deng reviewed the history of China-US relations in the past four decades since the re-opening of the relations and the historic progress achieved in wide ranging areas. He briefed on President Hu Jintao's state visit to the US last January and its substantive outcomes, and outlined the positions and policies of the Chinese side on the development of China-US relations. He expressed the hope that the two sides could maintain the momentum in high-level engagement, deepen mutual understanding and strategic trust, expand cooperation and work more closely in international and regional arena, while respecting each other's core interests and handling differences and sensitive issues properly, so as to jointly take forward this cooperative partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit.

Minister Deng expounded on the mutually beneficial nature of the China-US economic and trade relations. He highlighted China's 12th Five Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development and pointed out that there are substantial opportunities and broad prospect for closer economic ties between the two countries. He also spoke about the rapid progress and sound momentum that the two countries have seen in people-to-people exchange and cooperation at the local level. He hoped that Florida could seize the opportunities to further strengthen its ties with China and expand the mutually beneficial cooperation in the economic, cultural, educational and other areas.

During his stay in Orlando, Minister Deng met respectively with US Senator Bill Nelson, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, UCF President John Hitt and other people from all walks of life, to exchange views on how to further strengthen the communication and cooperation between Florida and China and others issues of shared interests.
