An Evening with Yu Ying

On the evening of June 6th, Charge d'affaires Lu Kang attended Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School's reception hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce (USCC). Tami Overby, vice president of USCC, members of the Chamber, Yu Ying board members, faculties and staff, students and their parents attended the reception.

Charge d'affaires Lu said in his remarks that with increasing exchanges between China and the United States, more and more Americans have begun to learn Chinese. As a bilingual school, Yu Ying has conducted valuable exploration and made positive contributions to Chinese language education as well as promotion of China-US cultural exchanges. He encouraged the students to master the Chinese language and make good use of it. He also encouraged them to try to understand Chinese society and culture and become bridges and envoys to promote mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

Ms. Overby said that the US-China relationship is one of the most important bilateral relationship in today's world. Looking into the future, Americans should encourage their children to learn Chinese language and culture and have a better understanding of China, which will be of great benefit for their future development .

During the reception, Students from Yu Ying sang Chinese songs and performed San Juban (three sentences and a half) with fluent Chinese. Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School was established in 2008. It is the only public elementary school in Washington, D.C. metropolitan area which has bilingual teaching in Chinese and English. The school now has 511 students studying from pre-k to sixth grade.
