Chinese President Hu Jintao Concludes Visit to Croatia and Returns Home (06/23/09)

On June 20, 2009, Chinese President Hu Jintao left the Croatian capital of Zagreb for home after concluding his state visit to Croatia.

During his stay in Zagreb, Hu exchanged views with his Croatian counterpart Stjepan Mesic and other Croatian leaders on bilateral ties as well as international and regional issues of common concern. Both sides signed a range of important cooperative documents concerning trade, health and aviation.

Hu arrived in Zagreb on June 19 for a state visit. Earlier, he attended the 9th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the first summit of BRIC countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India, and China, in Russia's Yekaterinburg. He also paid state visits to Russia and Slovakia.

At the SCO summit, the Chinese leader delivered an important speech, proposing that SCO member states should build political trust, deepen economic cooperation, strengthen security cooperation, expand humanities exchanges and adhere to the policy of opening to the outside world in a bid to enhance their cooperation. He announced that China would provide a 10-billion-U.S. dollar credit loan to SCO member states to deal with problems arising from the global financial crisis.

At the BRIC summit, President Hu pointed out that under the current situation, the four countries face both new development opportunities and unprecedented challenges. Hu called for joint efforts to seize the historical opportunities, strengthen solidarity and cooperation to safeguard the overall interest of developing countries. To this end, he urged the four countries to build political trust, deepen economic cooperation, advance humanities exchanges and enhanced exchange of experience.

Hu emphasized that the world is now faced with grave challenges. A major task of the BRIC countries and all other countries in the world is to cope with the global financial crisis and promote an early recovery of the world economy. He said that BRIC countries should commit themselves to bringing about an early recovery of the world economy, pushing forward the reform of international financial system, implementing the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and ensuring the security of food, energy, resource, and public health.

In Moscow, President Hu had talks with his Russian counterpart Medvedev. During their talks, the two heads of state discussed, in a spirit of mutual trust and mutual understanding, the status quo and development prospect for China-Russia strategic partnership of cooperation. They also exchanged views on major international and regional issues in a candid and in-depth manner and reached broad consensus. Both sides issued a joint statement and signed relevant cooperative documents.

In Bratislava, capital of Slovakia, President Hu, together with Slovak leaders, reviewed the development of bilateral ties since both countries forged their diplomatic relations 60 years ago, made overall planning on the future development and discussed international and regional issues of common concern.
