Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei's Exclusive Interview on US Arms Sales to Taiwan

Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei received an exclusive interview by the Xinhua News Agency on January 9. He Yafei said that the US arms sales to Taiwan seriously contravene the principles enshrined in the three Sino-US joint communiqués, in particular the August 17 Communiqué, and undermine China's national security and peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits. China is resolutely opposed to this move. China's stance on this issue is consistent, clear and firm. The US Government recently gave approval to Raytheon Company and Lockheed Martin Corporation to implement the arms sales package announced in October 2008 under the Bush Administration, and to sell to Taiwan weapons and equipments such as PAC-3 anti-missile system. China has made solemn representations to the US side on this move.

He Yafei said that since President Obama took office, China-US relations have maintained a momentum of steady growth thanks to the efforts of both sides. The positive momentum has not come easily and should be all the more valued by both sides. It should be pointed out that the Taiwan question remains the most important and sensitive issue at the core of China-US relations. We hope the US side will work with the Chinese side to earnestly follow through on the important agreement reached by leaders of our two countries on developing bilateral relations in the new era, strictly observe the principles of the three Sino-US joint communiqués and the China-US Joint Statement, increase dialogue, coordination and cooperation in various areas, and facilitate the sound and steady development of China-US ties. We strongly urge the US side to earnestly respect China's core interests and major concerns and immediately stop arms sales to Taiwan so as not to harm the larger interests of China-US cooperation.
