Liu Yandong and Secretary of State John Kerry of the US Co-chair the Plenary Session of the 7th Round of China-US High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange Held in Beijing

On June 7, 2016, Vice Premier Liu Yandong and Secretary of State John Kerry of the US co-chaired in Beijing the plenary session of the 7th round of China-US High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange.

Liu Yandong expressed that the joint opening ceremony of the 8th round of China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogues and the 7th round of China-US High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange was held in Beijing yesterday morning. President Xi Jinping attended the opening ceremony and delivered an important speech and President Barack Obama sent a written address. The high attention and important consensus of the Chinese and US heads of state have charted the course for and injected new impetus into bilateral people-to-people exchange. Over the past 6 years, China-US people-to-people exchange has witnessed constantly expanding areas, continuously enlarging scale, significantly elevating cooperation level and increasingly extensive social influences. Its important role in deepening the friendship between the two peoples and promoting the development of bilateral relations is becoming more and more prominent, constituting one of the three major pillars of the development of China-US relations along with strategic mutual trust and economic and trade cooperation.

Liu Yandong noted that deepening China-US people-to-people exchange is a people-oriented project with strategic foresight. Both sides should seize the direction and serve the overall interests of building a new model of China-US major-country relationship; put people first, encourage their participation and enable them to benefit more; update the exchange platforms to improve the quality and level of people-to-people exchange; give play to the governments' leading and propelling role, carry forward the consultation mechanism, and well develop people-to-people exchange so as to make more contributions to the sustained, healthy and stable development of China-US relations.

John Kerry said that the establishment of the mechanism of US-China High-Level Consultation on People-to-People Exchange shows the foresight and vision of leaders of both sides. Over the past 6 years, the mechanism has thrived with great vitality, promoted both sides to yield fruitful results from communication and cooperation in areas including education, science and technology, culture, public health, sports, women and youths, and played an important role in enhancing the friendship and mutual trust between the two peoples. The US is committed to developing US-China relations featuring mutual benefit and win-win results, and is willing to work with China to tap cooperation potential and further expand and deepen people-to-people exchange and bilateral cooperation.

Before the session, Liu Yandong and John Kerry posed for photos with main guests who attended China-US Universities Astronomy Collaboration Summit, China-US University and Think Tank Forum and other events, and jointly visited the best work exhibition of China-US Young Maker Competition.

Liu Yandong and John Kerry also held a small-scale meeting, exchanging in-depth views on deepening China-US people-to-people exchange.

Altogether 12 cooperation agreements were signed and 158 outcomes were achieved in this annual consultation.
