Wang Yi: Bright Road of China-Philippines Relations Shall Be Broader
2017/06/29

On June 29, 2017, after their talks, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano of the Philippines jointly met the press in Beijing. A Philippine reporter asked Wang Yi his opinions on China-Philippines relations after President Rodrigo Duterte tilted toward China.

Wang Yi said that in China’s view, based on the fundamental interests of the Philippines and its nation, President Rodrigo Duterte upholds an independent foreign policy, leading the Philippine people to a development path that truly meets its needs and suitable to its national conditions. If you have to say that President Rodrigo Duterte tilts toward someone, I believe that he tilts toward the Philippine people.

Wang Yi said that China and the Philippines are traditional friendly neighbors, and the exchanges between the two countries can be traced back to thousands of years ago. Bilateral diplomatic relations have also been established for 42 years, and good-neighborly friendship has always been the mainstream of bilateral relations. From a historical perspective, the current improvement of China-Philippines relations is actually the relationship between the two countries that swings from an abnormal state to a normal state. China is willing to give full support to President Rodrigo Duterte in leading the Philippine people to build the country, develop the economy and maintain domestic stability. China believes that as long as the two sides continue to adhere to the general direction of good-neighborly friendship, constantly enhance political mutual trust, properly handle sensitive issues, and deeply expand practical cooperation, the prospects for China-Philippines relations are promising. Namely, the relationship between China and the Philippines is on a bright road, which will be broader and more solid. The way to manage bilateral relations in the past is a dead end. If there are people who would like to retrace their steps, they will not just fail but also once again directly damage the interests of the Philippine people.
