Wang Yi Delivers Speech at General Debate of 72nd Session of UN General Assembly

On September 21, 2017 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended and delivered a speech at the General Debate of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly.

Wang Yi said that the UN has made exceptional contribution to peace and development of mankind, but the vision that all people enjoy peace, development and dignity has not yet been achieved. At the general debate of the UN General Assembly two years ago, Chinese President Xi Jinping called on us to foster a new type of international relations featuring win-win cooperation and to build a community of shared future for mankind. That is a great vision proposed by President Xi based on his full grasp of the prevailing trend of our times. It is also China's answer to what kind of future mankind should build. This vision, consistent with the purposes of the UN and the aspiration of its member states, has received extensive understanding and support from the international community. As such, it has become a goal of our common endeavor.

Wang Yi pointed out that in mankind's pursuit of greater development and prosperity, there are great opportunities like never before. There are unprecedented challenges for mankind's pursuit of lasting peace and sustainable development. The UN spirit must be renewed and its work must set out from a new starting point. Remaining the guardian of world peace, the UN must encourage all its members to "live together in peace with one another as good neighbors". Being a champion of international development, the UN should promote the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. As a pacesetter of global governance, the UN should make international relations more democratic, rules-based and equitable. Being a facilitator of exchanges between civilizations, the UN should encourage different civilizations, cultures and countries to flourish together through interactions and healthy competition.

Wang Yi expounded on China's position and stance on issues such as the Korean Peninsula situation, the Syrian crisis, the Palestinian issue, the anti-terrorism issue, climate change, the refugee crisis, global governance and globalization. Wang Yi emphasized that China has always been a force for peace. We have made unremitting efforts for peaceful resolution of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula. No matter how the situation evolves, no matter how long it takes, and no matter what difficulties lie ahead, China will remain committed to the goal of denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, stick to the direction of dialogue and negotiation and firmly uphold regional peace and stability.

In the end, Wang Yi pointed out that China's continuous progress will bring to the world greater benefits of peace, development and governance. China is an anchor of world peace, an engine for development and prosperity, and a champion of multilateralism. China will seek to realize its own dream in the context of the shared aspirations of all people around the world, and continue to contribute to the development of all other countries through its own progress. Let us work together for a brighter future of mankind.
