Premier Li Keqiang Chairs Meeting of Central Leading Group on Responding to Novel Coronavirus Disease Outbreak

On 16 March, Li Keqiang, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Premier of the State Council, and head of the Central Leading Group on Responding to the Novel Coronavirus Disease Outbreak, chaired a meeting of the leading group.

The meeting underlined the imperative to earnestly implement General Secretary Xi Jinping's important instructions and the decisions adopted by the leading group. It called for calibrating epidemic control efforts based on science and in light of the evolving situation. Targeted measures should be taken to curtail the cross-border spread of the virus. Epidemic control efforts will be followed up with measures to expedite full reopening of business and early return to normal work and life.

The meeting noted the sustained positive momentum in the epidemic control across the country, as seen in the overall containment of the fierce outbreak. Given the uncertainty brought by imported cases, a targeted approach should be applied to prevent the import and export of cases. The health, customs, immigration and education departments should step up communication, coordination and collaboration with their counterparts in countries concerned to promote joint application of the containment guidelines for international travel. Specific plans should be made for the return of out-of-towners stranded in Hubei and Wuhan, and of Hubei residents from other provinces. While ensuring high-quality treatment for severe cases and resumption of regular medical services in Hubei, arrangements will be made for health-care workers brought in from other parts of the country to return in groups.
