BEIJING, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met with the Syrian National Council delegation led by Burhan Ghalioun, head of Syrian leading opposition political group.

Yang elaborated China's position and principle on Syrian issue during the meeting, pointing out that UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan's efforts had provided a practical solution and an important opportunity for the current crisis.

He said all parties in Syria should honor the commitments to cease fire, support and assist United Nations' observers mission and create an environment for launching a political process with inclusiveness.

"China supports any solution that is in the fundamental interests of Syrian people and is acceptable for all parties in Syria. China is willing to continue to play a positive and constructive role in resolving Syrian issue in a fair, peaceful and proper way," Yang said.

Ghalioun said the Syrian National Council advocates to resolve the Syrian crisis with political solutions, supports a six-point plan brokered by Kofi Annan, opposes outside interference and highly values China's important role in advancing a solution to the Syrian issue.

He thanked China for its humanitarian assistance to Syrian people.

The Syrian National Council delegation is visiting China at the invitation of Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs. Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhai Jun also held a meeting with Ghalioun on May 7.
