Chinese, US presidents to meet in San Diego (05/11/04)

    Chinese President Hu Jintao and his US counterpart George W. Bush will meet during the upcoming 12th Informal Leadership Meeting of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in San Diego, Chile, Vice Foreign Minister Zhou Wenzhong told a press conference here on Nov. 5.

    This will be their first meeting after George W. Bush won his second term as US President, which is of great significance to the development of the China-US relations, he noted.

    During the meeting, Zhou said, President Hu will elucidate China's principles and stand on how to maintain and advance the constructive relationship between the two countries and exchange views with Bush on issues of common concern.

    China hopes this meeting will review and consolidate progress the two countries have achieved in promoting their relationship and bring new thoughts into their future development, Zhou said.

    Currently, the relevant departments of the two sides are making preparations for the upcoming meeting in a detailed way, he said.

    The US side also expressed its willingness to make sure the meeting succeed together with the Chinese side and play an important role in the development of Sino-US ties for the next four years, he said.
