WASHINGTON, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong said Tuesday that developing a sound relationship between China and the United States needed broad support from the two peoples.
The foundation stone of good relations between countries lay in the masses, Liu said at a reception marking the second annual high-level China-U.S. Consultation on People-to-People Exchange, which gathered more than 500 people.
She called on people from all circles in the two countries to play their role as usual to participate in and push forward China-U.S. people-to-people and cultural exchanges and lay a solid foundation among the peoples for developing the China-U.S. cooperative partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit.
Since Henry Kissinger visited China and "ping pong diplomacy" was launched 40 years ago, China-U.S. relations had consistently moved forward and were now one of the most dynamic and important bilateral relations, Liu said.
China-U.S. amity not only benefited the two peoples, but also was conducive to the peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large, she said.
With the development of economic globalization in depth and global issues on the rise, China and the United States should look ahead from the strategic perspective to develop bilateral relations in the spirit of cooperative partners, she said.
Liu said the two nations should also stick to the principle of reciprocity and mutual benefit, communicate openly, seek common ground while reserving differences, address differences in a proper way and maximize common interests.
Also on Tuesday, the Chinese state councilor met senior adviser to the U.S. President Valerie Jarrett and former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright on bilateral ties and people-to-people and cultural exchanges.
