President Jiang Urges U.S. to Properly Handle Taiwan Issue

(March 2, 2000)  Chinese President Jiang Zemin stressed in Beijing on March 2 that the policy of the Chinese  central government on Taiwan is "consistent."

Jiang made the remarks in his meeting with former U.S.  President George Bush at Zhongnanhai, the site of the central  government.

He told Bush that certain words and actions recently taken by  the U.S. side "could not but make us feel serious concerns."

He urged the U.S. side to properly handle the Taiwan issue so  as to avoid another setback of China-U.S. relations
