Chinese President Jiang Zemin refuted some
overseas media's allegations that China was involved in
political donations to the United States, calling the
allegations "sheer fabrications."
At
a joint press conference on June 27 with the visiting U.S.
President Bill Clinton, which was held here shortly after
formal talks between the two heads of state, Jiang said that
before Clinton's visit, he learned about some media reports
alleging China have been involved in some so-called
political contributions in the US.
"I
really think it's very absurd and ridiculous, and I think
they are sheer fabrications. China can never do such a
thing, and China never interferes in other country's
internal affairs," he stressed.
Jiang
said that President Clinton also brought up these
allegations in their talks this morning.
"I told him that after hearing these
allegations, we conducted very earnest investigation into
the matter, and the results of the investigation show that
there is never such a thing," said Jiang.
"We believe that the people can have
different understandings of one fact, this is actually a
manifestation of democracy. However, what's important is
that the fact itself should not be distorted," he
added.
