On October 29, 2021 local time, while attending the G20 Summit in Rome, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi made remarks on the recent claims of a few countries including the United States to support Taiwan's "robust, meaningful participation throughout the UN system and in the international community".

Wang Yi said, there is only one China in the world, the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and Taiwan is a part of the Chinese territory. This is a universal consensus of the international community, and the norm governing international relations that are observed by all countries.

Wang Yi stressed, the historical and legal fact that there is only one China brooks no challenge, and the process of the 1.4 billion Chinese people in advancing the peaceful reunification of the motherland is unstoppable. Taiwan has no future except for its reunification with the mainland. Except for being a part of China, Taiwan has no other status in international law.

Wang Yi said, in 1971, the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 2758 with an overwhelming majority, deciding to restore China's legal seat in the United Nations, which has completely resolved China's political, legal and procedural issues in the United Nations and international institutions.

Recently, a few countries including the United States have attempted to make a breakthrough on the Taiwan question. This practice violates their political commitments when they established diplomatic relations with China and ignores the common will expressed by the majority of member states in Resolution 2758, which damages the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and also undermines the peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. They could not stop the one-China principle 50 years ago, and they are even less likely to succeed today in the 21st century. Should they insist on going down the wrong path, they must pay the price.
