2/3 of Taiwanese support anti-Chen Shui-bian campaign(08/21/06)

A Taiwan newspaper opinion poll has found that 68.5 percent of residents in China's Taiwan Province support the campaign to oust Chen Shui-bian, according to reports in Taiwan-based media.

On Aug. 12, Shih Ming-teh, former chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), launched the campaign to force the Taiwan leader to step down after revelations of his family's involvement in a series of scandals, and began to accept donations.

On Monday, the campaign's headquarters had received 94.61 million NT Dollars, close to its goal of 100 NT Dollars from 1 million local people by Aug. 22.

The campaigners plan to organize a mass sit-down in front of Chen's office from Sep. 9 to last until the Taiwan leader resigns, but they are reconsidering bringing the date forward, possibly this week, to raise the pressure on Chen, who has refused to resign.
