2003/10/23

Gong Shengliang was sentenced to death because of raping women and establishing cult organization, Chinese Embassy Spokesman Xie Feng said on January 9.

Xie made the remarks when asked to make a comment on Gong’s case.

The spokesman said that Gong Shengliang, a 49-year-old man from Zaoyang, Hubei Province, was charged with establishing a cult organization “ the South China Christianity”, raping women and violating social orders.

Court investigation shows that Gong set up the cult together with Li Ying, a 36-year-old woman in 1991. After it was banned, Gong and Li commanded their followers to engage in criminal activities, such as  hurting people and setting fire intentionally for 10 times. Gong himself, using his "privileged" position of so-called "religion-founder", raped 14 women.

On December 25, 2001, Gong was sentenced to death and Li death with a two-year reprieve according to Chinese criminal laws.
